Hello everyone.
I hope it's OK if I asked a few questions here?
I am using a GeForce 8800GTS 320MB (working without any additional kexts, just EFI String) with my OSX 10.5.7 (which I plan to update to 10.5.8). Now I would like to buy me a GTX 260.
My goal is to keep my system as good as it is at the moment, but with a better graphic card instead.
1) What GFX String should I use for this card with 896MB or does somebody have a string for exactly that card?
2) In addition to these GFX Strings (or better, after having placed the String in com.apple.boot.plist), I will have to install the eVGA Nvidia driver package in order to get the GTX 260 to work, right?
3) If I decided to use DSDT (until now my system worked perfectly fine without, but maybe when I upgrade to 10.5.8 I could/should also use DSDT) would it be better to integrate the graphic card into that aml-file (at least if I can find a good tutorial ho to do that) instead of creating an EFI Sting or are both methods equal in perfomance/stability?
Thanks for taking your time for reading, greetings herb

Hi Guys,
I have a similar problem with my Dell D630 with quadro nvs 135m. I get the string as described (thanks aqua) and from then on I can select resolutions in "Display". No QE/CI yet. Neither do I get it with silent natit x64 nor other kexts. Does anybody have a suggestion, please?

There is no difference in performance between dsdt.aml and com.apple.boot.plist with regards to performance as both ways just inject information at boot time. It is the drivers that determine performance. Personally, the com.apple.boot.plist is the the easier to deal with I feel as it is more accessible of the two.
ynoc,
Did you try without your dsdt.aml file in place or nvdarwin.

Thanks for making the strings available. They get my 9800GT recognised but, unfortunately, QE isn't enabled. I know that the string I put into com.apple.Boot.plist is used because when I modify the model in the plist file and reboot the correct string is shown in System Profiler. When booting in verbose mode I can see that the system is using the NVDANV50HAL.kext from Snow Leopard. The weird thing is that the window in system profiler doesn't say "Quartz Extreme: not supported" but simply doesn't mention QE at all. I've attached a screenshot and copied the same output into this post below: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT DDL: Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT DDL Type: GPU Bus: PCIe PCIe Lane Width: x16 VRAM (Total): 512 MB Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0614 Revision ID: 0x00a2 ROM Revision: 3172a Displays: Cinema Display: Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888) Main Display: Yes Mirror: Off Online: Yes Rotation: Supported Display Connector: Status: No Display Connected Has anyone seen this before? Why would OS X omit QE from this list, rather than saying supported or unsupported? Why would it say that rotation is supported? Any ideas? Attachments:

You are using snow leopard? Snow does not show QE&CI in system profiler as all macs nowadays can do both these things natively.

Thank you. Slightly embarrassing. You're absolutely right, QE was enabled all along but Snow Leopard doesn't show it in System Profiler. In my defence, I'm replacing a Power Mac G5, which can't run SL, with the Hackintosh. So, I've never seen SL before.
How do you know that QE is working in SL? Turns out there are a couple of options but the easiest ones to check are: Launch the Chess app and move a piece. If it works, QE works. Or drop a widget onto the Dashboard. If you see a cool water-like effect, QE works.

You need to get the Apple DVI to TV adapter. The Apple stores are down at the moment so I cannot link to it. Either that or mess with your GFX strings following this info to change your NVCAP from NVInject forums.
(I would suggest this for your NVCAP:
04000000 00000300 1c000000 00000000 00000000)
dual DVI cards :
04000000 00000300 0c000000 00000000 00000000 --> disabling 5th position, no TV output. 04000000 00001300 0c000000 00000000 00000000 --> 5th position for TV out set on channel 1, TV out available when no other display is connected on channel 1. 04000000 00000300 1c000000 00000000 00000000 --> 5th position for TV out set on channel 2, TV out available when no other display is connected on channel 2.
DVI + VGA cards :
04000000 00000100 06000000 00000000 00000000 --> disabling 4th position, no TV output, only 1 output on channel 1 and DVI + VGA on channel 2 04000000 00000300 04000000 00000000 00000000 --> disabling 4th position, no TV output, only 1 output on channel 2 and DVI + VGA on channel 1 04000000 00000300 0e000000 00000000 00000000 --> VGA only on channel 1, 4th position for TV out set on channel 2, TV out available when no other display is connected on channel 2. 04000000 00000900 06000000 00000000 00000000 --> VGA only on channel 1, 4th position for TV out set on channel 1, TV out available when no other display is connected on channel 1 (DVI + VGA on channel 2 using position 2 and 3, bitmap 0 1 1 0)
Laptops usually have first channel using only 1 output for internal panel, on position 1, and depending on how many other outputs are available, second channel can use positions 2, 3, and 4 : 04000000 00000100 02000000 00000000 00000000 04000000 00000100 06000000 00000000 00000000 04000000 00000100 0e000000 00000000 00000000
The reason it does not work out of the box is that you may have noticed that Apple graphics cards do not have TV out!!

Aquamac <> you're the man Thanks for your efi strings i've manage my nvidia 9800gt 1024 mb CI/QE/OPENGL , everyting working after almost a mont struguling to install SL (graphic card was the problem as I first have ATI HD 3870, the i swittched to Nvidia 9800 gt). Thousand thanks MAN, YOU"RE THE ONE. But now I have one small probllem, that is (as Nvidia 9800 gt , has DVI-D, D Sub and HDMI), only working output is D SUB, unfortunately no DVI-D. As i was used on using DVi-d as my main output always, i somehow now cannot get used on D Sub.ANy suggestions, to solve this Again MAN, thanks, thanks thanks

Hi fcbayern, Sounds like your NVCAP is incorrect. Most of the downloads I put up on P1 of this thread are for dual DVI cards as these are the most common. Is your VGA closest to the motherboard? Do you have a pic you can post of the back plate of the card?

Yes, i'll will post the picture later on But tell me , can i myself change the NVCAP in in.plist ? and tell me the exact procedure, or its better to post a picture of my plate(asus p5k se , crossflashed to p5kr, beause of the AHCPI faeuture) and maybe you can edit for me. As for the DVI output, it gives only black screen , after Snow login , but the apple spinning is there. Also, maybe I should try HDMI to DVI switch, what do you think?

I've cheked my NVCap with NVCAP maker 1.4 It's the same : 04000000 00000300 0c000000 00000007 00000000 no problem here Maybe because i have in real 3 outputs tha last one, DVI doesnt work, and the other 2 (HDMI and CRT are working). I;m using now the second output CRT, maybe the first, that is HDMI is also working

Yes I suspect that HDMI is working too. NVCAP maker seems to give that info for many different cards and is not entirely accurate. You can change the NVCAP in your in.plist using "Property List Editor" that is free with Apple developer tools. You will also find this on your OSX install DVD. Your card is quite unusual in that your output 1 is DVI and 2 is VGA - they are usually the other way around. I am not sure of another way to find your true NVCAP. If you look at the info above in reply 367, you could experiment with a few of those NVCAPS.

Aquamac, thanks for all of your work and help on behalf of all the newbs in the Hackintosh community.
On that note :-) I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of getting the drivers to load for a GTX280 on SL.
Using gfxutil I created the string and inserted it into the com.apple.boot.plist and removed NVinject.kext from the system library extentions. After reboot, graphic card info is coming up as it should.
But when trying to install the evga 200 series driver package or the nvidia retail driver package I'm getting the message that system already has drivers which support this card. But I'm unable to switch resolutions and there is no acceleration with respect to graphics.
Please help.
