Hello, I have been looking around this forum for a while now, especially with the Hack pro mod. Just a quick question. Is there any way you could fit a regular ATX mobo and a 9800gx2 or 2 in a mac pro chassis without modification to the drive bays? thanks in advance

Funny you should ask that question. I have a mac pro case and an ATX board on it's way and will be using 2 cards. Don't know how big a shoe horn I will need and it may be a little while before I have the answer. The tray will certainly need some modification, I am intending to cut a slot behind the drives, so they will still be removable.

clever idea..... I'm gonna wait and see how this pans out... would be interested to see if the mobo lines up with the expansion slots on the back... If this works i'm following suit! my M-ATX is tearing my hair out! now.. do i go ASUS or GIGABYTE.. Oh... Tominated you'd fit a GX2 no problems...

Hi Joe, it's one of these: Asus P5E3 Premium/Wifi@N Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard. It already arrived, but I have just got back from a weekend away so no chance to play!

Tominated you'd fit a GX2 no problems... J. would i fit 2 in is the question. If i can get an ATX mobo, then i have the option of quad sli later on. but it depends on how much the 9900 series will cost...

oh another question: with the HDD bays, do they actually slot into a tray, or do they hang off the metal support above them?

In fact, they actually slot into a tray which hang off the metal support above them. You should ask more often to Uncle Google. I found this : www.macbidouille.com/articles/227/page2/The first and third pictures shows how the HDD's are inside the trays and how the trays can glide into the support tray.

Aquamac.. you like your expensive gear huh... I'm thinking on the GA-X48-DQ6 I am a fan of the ASUS but i reaaaaally cant afford to move the DDR3 yet.. gonna half my 4gb of DDR2 between the Mac pro and the QS. With Both the ASUS and GIGABYTE I noticed the position of the first and second PCiX slots seems further down the mobo... do you not think this could be a issue with being able to fit 2 Dual slot GFX cards in without being in the way of the Hard drives?? can wait to see how it pans out... I'm thinking of doing the hole this weekend... before i reinstall 10.5.2 and fit my USB cable.. J.
