 My Hackintosh: MDD into G5 case is OSX86 now
« Thread Started on Jan 6, 2008, 12:09am »

Latest pictures, see the last post :

Here are the tools to be used to bend and cut the copper tubes which will be used to transport the cooling liquid from the G5 case to the Mac Pro case :
[image]

Here is the G5 door with the final version of the opening Apple logo without the plexi panel and the 3D Apple lighted logo (seven leds inside in total):
[image]

Here with the remaining piece of plexi panel used in previous tests. You can see the difference because of the reflection on the panel :
[image]

Just for the fun and by curiosity I attached the G5 opened door onto a G5 case, check the result!!
[image]

After selling my G4 MDD, I started my Hackintosh, based on the first made by aquamac.

Case: G5 with G4 opening door
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 , update : now is Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P
CPU: Dual 2 Quad 6600
Graphics Card: 7900 GTO Mad Moxx PCI-E
Ram Memory: OCZ FLEX XLC 4GB (4 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz (PC2 6400) OCZ2FX800C42GK 4-4-4-15 will be Water Cooled, update : are watercooled ;D

Still working on the case, I thought first to install the PSU at the top where the HDD's are (like inside the Mac Pro)

and the watercooling at the bottom : http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?....cmd=si&img=3644
but the water container from Gotoh was too wide.

I kept the waterblock to make this one : http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?....cmd=si&img=3624
which will be later used inside another G4 MDD with this compact pomp and radiator:
http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Liguid/All-In-One/cl-w0065/cl-w0065.asp

For the Hackintosh I will use the same as this one :
http://thermaltech.co.uk/shop/thermaltak....stem-p-255.html with the waterblock from the cl-w0065 and the radiator from the set I got from Gotoh

To expand the space at the bottom of the case I lowered the bottom plate which will be support by two acrylic pannels covered by a piece of grey mesh and I used two "hands" from a G4 MDD case to lift up the case.

I could not find the way to upload pictures here, but I succeeded @ insanelymac.com

the topic is called : My NOT yet finished Hack the Tosh
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=93600

I started with the lowering of the bottom plate of the case to install the PSU and the water pomp and water tank. I can this way have the space necessary for the rotation of the Mobo tray witch is the opening door system from the G4MDD in the same time.

I finaly got the original G5 back fans working, i put some pictures to show how.

In fact the are six cables, two doubles, made with one wire from each fan and four singles, two per fan. Between the 4 combinations ony one will work : one double to the yellow wire (12V) , one double to black wire (neutral) and one of the singles to the red one (5V), the other single does not need to be connected, it is for the tours per min counter.I start with the doubles in position and tried one single at a time, did not work, then switch the position of the doubles and tried again with one single wire and the fan started. Did the same for the other fan and then connect the two fans on the same plug, the two singles wires on the same connector.

I post some pictures showing how I mod the PC CPU and the G4 MDD PSU cases to install the PSU at the bottom of the G5 case, with two 80mm Verax fans. The new cover was made with two pieces of mesh panel.

I finally got one install working. iAtkos 10.5.1 .
A lot of trouble the first install because I had update with Apple... Now the small problem was I forgot to partition with Gparted live cd (Fat32), before with a PC, the partition was DOS.
No internet, got the message the cable is unplugged. I will try something found on insanelymac.com .
Have succefully tried overclocking to 3 Gig with Ram @1000 Mhz.
Still to try to reinstall the special version from aquamac. ;)

I am using the OCZ FLEX XLC @800 Mhz watercooled. All tubes are standard plastic, but I fanzy to use some small parts in copper to organise all those tubes.Will check with the "do it yourself" shop . ;D

bb,
Looking good! How about something like this to keep your lines arranged?

I know they're for spark plug wires but you get the idea. ;)

After reading this guide : HOWTO :overclock (Quads) and CD (Duals)- A Guide v1.1,
I change the ratio to 1:1 for the Ram. 250 mhz,333Mhz or 400 mhz for the CPU, same for the Ram (x2, because DDR2).
I got respectively 2.99 Ghz working, 3.2 Ghz working and 4.2 Ghz not working. I will try different figures between 333 and 399 to get the highest stable one. I let the Vcore unchanged @1.3.

I got the Ethernet connection working via the Finder, still have the Audio to try.

I could install the "About this Mac" background from aquamac, the black one. Great!!

But I cannot change the text with iatkos, because I got the message that "I do not have the privileges to do it and I can see and change the priv. in the Finder with "Get info", but it does not work!! I cannot save the modifs in SystemVersion.plist.

Still have to delete "unknown processor" in About this Mac. But in System Profiler, the name appears correctly : Core 2 Quad and the Machine Name is the MOBO name : 965P-DS3P !!

Aqua, I have tried what you saying here:

Hi Ritalin, how you doin,
Go to:
System/Library/SystemProfiler/SPPlatformReporter/Contents/MacOS/SPPlatformReporter
Drag a copy to your desktop to work on
and open with Hex Edit,
Scroll down to the actual Processor name that your computer is currently using and edit it with the one you want, making sure you do not change the amount of spaces, as long as you leave one bit between each processor type you will be OK.

But I cannot find the infos with Hex Edit.

I found something similar here : SPiPlatformReporter.spreporter,
but not the latest intel CPU's

I just want to get rid of "Unknown" which is coming just after the CPU speed. I did not need to change anything else in "About this Mac" or in the "System Profiler", beause all the infos are correct.

I will upload the Grab picture on Insanelymac.com.

To change the info in "About this Mac".

Navigate to System/Library/CoreServices. Find Loginwindow, right click it and left click "Show package contents".

Double click Contents/Resources/English.lproj. Drag "About this Mac.strings to your desktop.

Open the copy on your desktop up with TEXT EDITOR. Scroll down to the part that talks about a single processor shown below:

//"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" = "Processor: %@";
"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" = "3 GHz Core 2 Quad";
"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_L3CACHE_FORMAT" = "%@ L3 cache";

In the "ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" change the info to whatever you want displayed (as shown above). (You will have to manually change this in future to whatever you want displayed).

Hit "Save" and back up your Standard About this Mac.strings somewhere else. Then DELETE the original "About this Mac.strings". Drag your modified version back into the folder.

Repair permissions, you are done!

Log out then back in, open up "About This Mac" and enjoy the new info!!! :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will not change info in System Profiler.

To do that you can navigate to: System/Library/SystemProfiler.

Right click SPPlatformReporter.spreporter. Click Show package contents. Double Click Contents/Resources/English.lproj or whatever language your computer is set to. Drag a copy of "Localizable.strings" to your desktop. Open it up with "TEXT EDITOR.

Add info in as I have done below:

SPHardwareDataType = "Hardware";

hardware_overview = "Hardware Overview";
machine_name = "Model Name";
machine_model = "Model Identifier";
cpu_type = "Processor Name";
current_processor_speed = "Processor Speed";"3.02 GHz"="3 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme™";
minimum_processor_speed = "Minimum CPU Speed";

It must be exact. For instance System Profiler shows my system as having a processor running at 3.02 GHz, there fore to change info you have to put "3.02 GHz"= "followed by whatever info you want to show";

Now here is the complicated bit. If you have a Core 2 Quad as I do, the processor name does not show up in Sys profiler. So that is why I added the info above into "Processor speed". If you have a Core 2 Duo you will want to simply add your info as below:

SPHardwareDataType = "Hardware";

hardware_overview = "Hardware Overview";
machine_name = "Model Name";
machine_model = "Model Identifier";
cpu_type = "Processor Name";"Whatever Unknown info is currently shown"="Whatever info you want to show";
current_processor_speed = "Processor Speed";
minimum_processor_speed = "Minimum CPU Speed";

Save your info. Back up and delete the original "Localizable.strings" and drag your modified version back into the file.

Repair permissions, Log out and then back in.

Open System Profiler to see your new info. :D

Thank you very much Aqua. I realize that the actual Proc speed is given by" %@" but also the word "Unknown". If we could locate it we could change it by " " blank space or whatever if the field is long enough.
In the meantime I change in About this Mac, the processor field with Core2 Quad @ 3.28Ghz(2.4Ghz) , which are real speed and (original speed).

In System Profiler I have changed nothing, quite happy with the infos, included real Proc speed :

Machine Name: Mac
Machine Model: 965P-DS3P
Processor Name: Intel® Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @
Processor Speed: 3.27 GHz
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Processor Features: FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR PAE MCE CX8 APIC SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT PSE36 CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 SS HTT TM SSE3 MON DSCPL VMX EST TM2 SSSE3 CX16 TPR PDCM
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.46 GHz
Boot ROM Version: Hack.88Z.int.0sh.061193037 (Award Software International, Inc.)

Hi Aqua, I have been playing around from yesterday with the infos you gave concerning About this Mac and System Profiler. I finally got this :

Hardware Overview:

Machine Name: Intel inside G5 case
MOBO Gigabyte: 965P-DS3P
Processor Features: Intel® Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @
2.4 Ghz overclocked @: 3.27 GHz
Total Number Of Cores: 4

OCZ Flex PC2 6400 WC: 4 GB
Overclocked Bus Speed: 1.46 GHz
Boot ROM Version: Hack.88Z.int.0sh.061193037 (Award Software International, Inc.)

I changed the infos from the left columns only except the first line. I changed :

/* default name */
"Mac" = "Mac";

to :

/* default name */
"Mac" = "Intel inside G5 case";
