Hey guys. I need a little help from you fine folks.
Just finished up my Hack Pro but there's still one bit of unfinished business. I can't get the SATA to USB thing to work.
I've stripped the wires from my SATA cable and connected the necessary wires to my USB header cable. Followed the diagram found on this site (thanks, Aquamac!). The only exception is that I only had a single central ground wire in my SATA cable.
Booted into OS X (10.6) and popped in my USB thumb drive. Nothing. Tried switching the two data wires on one set of USB wires. Still nothing. Tried switching the data wires on the other set. Nope.
Hmm. Tried a different thumb drive. Nope. Hacked up another SATA cable. Nada.
Any idea what my problem could be? Shouldn't I at least be seeing the light on my USB thumb drive come on? It should at least be getting power, right? The SATA is just for data, isn't it?
I'm pretty sure I did the PSU cable correctly. I soldered my wires in pretty well. And my power button/LED are working fine.
What am I missing?

Check all your connections including all your power connections too. Seems strange that it is not working but run through all your connections again including any earth connections to make sure you are getting power.

Unless I'm crazy, the connections are solid. I'm using a PS cable extension and just splicing into that. I just exposed a little bit of the wire and connected to those points (I found out later that you did something similar, aqua). At first I just twist-tied the wires in but after I couldn't get the USB to work I figured I should solder in just to be sure it wasn't a loose connection. So I double-checked the wires and soldered. I have a G31M-ES2L and everything was identical to your diagram.
Same as before. Maybe I'll try to post some close-up pics of my wiring job. This is driving me insane. =)

Doesn't work here. Nothing at all.. :/ Tried every possible combination, with and without central ground. I don't have a single central ground, but one small on each side. They look to be in contact through silver foil with the outer grounds, which is why I also tried without them. Separated them for the occasion.
Did the audio yesterday, and only one channel work. (the cable with my solder is OK, tested the conductivity.) Must the the front panel.. depressing..

Very interesting godspeed, thank you for the picture. I will check as soon as I get home. Do you know why that would be? Different pins? I can't believe Apple screwed up a whole FP layout.. Thanks again anyhow.

At last I got to check the front panel. It is indeed the "wrong" one. Is it d**ned in some way? Does it have a different pinout? mmmm......

FYI-
I was able to get the other board to work, the one on the right. Just attach +5v to the remaining two pins that are normally not connected. FW + USB all work (had to switch the -/+ data for both USB's
Still working on Audio. I will post with more in-depth descriptions once I am done.
