Hello there, i have already introduced my G5 hackmod in the MDD forums, but today i made few more shots of the machine's final build. I wanted to make original ports to fit in the place, but it's too many desoldering and soldering so i gave up for now. Maybe i'll do it later. I also switched from 7800GTX to 7600GS with passive cooling, just because i want my computers as silent as possible (man, i own two intel iMacs and they have no silence competitors on the market!) and my youngest sister also wants to play some more or less modern games so i traded her card for mine. Also STALKER runs smoother on iMac HD2600XT so what the heck?
This whole this is a challenge, you know, but the most hard parts were the new standoffs (i dug like million of forums for the info how who has made it) and original heatsink backplate (i still dont know if it cools good because my overclocked e6400 sometimes just doesnt start up). The goal was to make clear transition from G5 to Intel hack as much transparent as possible. Keep as many original items and parts as possible. Keep expenses as much low as possible.
The back fans are now Zalmans with downvoltage resistors so they are quiet, much less noise than original Apple's on 5V. The intel fan is there for the reason i dont see startup message that fan is faulted, it also helps make some good air flow and make no noise.
Hard drives are WD Raptors 740 10K rpm, i wanted a cool mirror raid, followed aquamac guide, but it doesnt seem to have any real perfomance over one drive. So i'll probably remove one.
Front panel has everything working.
The PSU is original 450 Watts G5 PSU with re-soldered wires off the somewhat broken Hiper PSU (got it for free from a friend).
Expenses were:
Stock config dead mobo G5 PowerMac with keyboard and mouse ~ $200.
Asus P5K-VM ~ $95 (brand new).
2 x Patriot 1Gb RAM kit of two ~ $60 (brand new).
Acer DVD-RW that came with PowerMac exchanged for my old flashed Pioneer 111L (109D orignally i IIRC).
7800GTX 256Mb PCI-E ~ $40 (used, from a co-worker).
E6400 CPU ~ $100 (used).
1 x WD740 ~ $72 (used).
1 x WD740 ~ $ (traded for a 74Gb SCSI hdd that i got for free).
Took me about two months to finish, not everyday work, but some days i've made a lot on it.
Now i wish i can have Mac Pro case for the next mod.
So enjoy the images and let me know your toughts! Thanks!
From this pic on, there are new ones. Here's the whole album.
