I read that the R420 & R480 are software controlled chips so they are basically the same. ? I have the OEM X850XT 108 Mac 128 KB ROM. I have a ST M25P05 ROM Chip wich on TheMacElite site is listed as 64KB Chip. So the ST M25P05 Chip is not a 64 KB Chip its Actually a 128 KB Chip. Well it worked I now have a X850XT with the R481 Chip.

Hi,
Yes, you cannot always believe what it says on the top of the rom chip, that is for sure. I have had so called 64 kb chips turn out to be 128 kb chips before too.

X800 & X850 cards have exactly the same chip. It is only the rom that is different. Basically, ATI overclocked the card and called it something else. But some faster X850's were dual slot with a bigger fan taking 2 slots and some had the same fan as the X800. Depending on how much room there is around the card you can get a bit out of it, but if you are in an MDD say these cards get hot enough to cook your breakfast on, so under those conditions I would leave as stock. Leave it going for a while then touch one of the memory chips on the reverse side, you probably won't be able to keep your finger on there for more than a few seconds. Yeah I know they get really hot. But When I had it running as the R420 I got stable 520 MHz and 560 Mhz. But since a Month o so I had it running at 425 Mhz and 499 Mhz, couse the MDD reved up the big 120 mm Fan and after Half adn Hour that gets really annoying. I need to clean dust out. I really only Clock it up for Games. But the good news is that it can handle those Speeds. I'm planning a Watercooling for CPU & GPU & Ram. It's quite possible that I can get a 320 Watt Peltier Device and cooling the Liquid with two Blocks sandwiching the Peltier, and a 120 Rad cooling the Hot side of the Peltier. But still need some cash. I can only say hands down on the Sapphire Cards. The double slot also cools the Rams as I can see. I have the single slotter, mines a bit diffrent from the X3 cooler.
