For the fans, the two central holes should be -ve (black) from your molex. One outside is 5v red and the other 12v yellow. They will go like a rocket though, so you may want to try the two outsides at 5v (red). Like this:

cool, do you know of a 4pin to 3pin fan adapter cable? i have a few ZALMAN fanmates laying around... thought I'd wire the front two fans to one of them and the back fan to the other... then allow the Motherboard to control my CPU fan and GPU fan.

Don't know of an adapter, but they use a bit of juice those fans, so watch out you don't blow your board. Don't know about the rear fan though, I had a few probs with the dual 92 mm G5 fans, they did not work, but who knows they could have been faulty.

I'm another step closer. I've done the wiring for the powerbutton I'm yet to buy a USB header to get the SATA-USB cable done. also need to work out how to connect the cable to Mobo pins for power and what not.


Guy at work made this for me.. mounts the plug socket just outside the case to allow more room. the pictures dont do this justice is great.. polished and machine made.


Fitted, the screw holes run all the way.


Removed the Apple standoffs.


Mounted them on the Mobo.


Applied JB weld to the base of each one, then set it in place inside the case. Left it over night to set.

I'll post pics of the powercable once i'm home.

Its funny but since i had activity monitor launch at login both my restart and shutdown work! its silly but worth a try...

Picking up my RAM cage and CPU hs cover tomorrow from the post office... all wiring is done... time to put it together.

OK, So i've put my Mac Pro together today.. but i've come across a problem... when i did my powerbutton wiring i didnt label the 2 cables that go to the MOBO (on, off switch) i have two cables... i see the two pins on the DS2R you say they have to connect too.. now my only option is trial and error? I'm i gonna cause damage doing this? plus? i bought some jumper pins. to use to attach to 2 cables is this right? coz im thinking its not... i also have a old powerswitch with header and cable i could mod to use... is this a better path?

Do the two cables connect to one pin each? or two pins? im a little lost with it...

SO.... its first stage complete...

Im not using the powerbutton yet.. need to know how to attach it to the MOBO (connection header or wire to the switch cables on my temp button)

The case fans are all 4-pin FANS! i cant find a 4-pin fan controller or 4pin- to molex cable. so I'm either gonna figure it out or buy some top end PC (3-Pin) 120mm fans. might even wire up some form of fan controller using Aluminum dials on the front.


lastly i wanna put a window in where you can see the CPU cooler. oh then... buy a new Graphics card 8800GTX or wait for the 9800GTX (when oh when) yeah.. and maybe a 22ins LCD screen.

I'll grab a better digital camera and take some cool shots.

so... thanks so much... you guys rock.. but i'm far from done!

This is looking wonderful! Where did you get the front fans memory housing etc from, Apple palace? Can't wait to see more photos.

As far as the power button is concerned, try it round the way you think and pull it quickly back off if it does not work. You should not do any harm. I tried all sorts of wrong connections when I was working out how to connect up. Try just one connection then the other.

Can you do a photo of how the Zalman fits within the memory cage?

Thanks Aquamac, I got all my parts from the eBay Store WeFixMac they are really helpfull and if the part you want is not on the store just give them the apple code and they soon hook you up.

I'm heading back to my folks today (Motherday) so i'll pick up a good camera. I'm also going to be pull all the APPLE cooling out the case so i can get the front panel working so when i do. I'll take lots of photos.. it took some moding.. but once it shed a little weight it slotted in great!

just to help me clear things up... he 2 cable i have for the power button, do they connect to one pin each on the mobo.. or to a header then connects the one cable to two pins. or do the 2 cables have to be connected to seperate pins but joined? (like a normal power one/off switch?)

All you need are the 2 wires. 1 for the power switch and 1 for the led. They go to the 2 individual pins as shown on my drawing. The other connections are supplied by the connections to the main power plug.

As the two pins on the motherboard are next to each other, you can use the double plug from a power switch, plug that into the board and connect the other end to the 2 connectors ont the mac pro front panel.

Hey Aquamac i had no joy getting my hands on a better digicam.. starting to regret letting go of my N95 for the iPhone...

I've taken a couple closer shots of the RAM cage. but like i said when i pull it all out to attach the power button cables I'll take some more detailed shots.



The Zalman clears the RAM cage by a few millimeters, its sits really nice. I placed some more rubber edging along that strip and also across the back where it is close to the motherboard.


Still a little edging work to clean on there on the left hand side.. you can see that the RAM, CPU and North bridge all fit nicely inside the RAM cage.. i think this will work out really well when i come to fitted some watercooling.
