Hi,
I'm considering passing my MDD onto our 7 year old son to replace his aging eMac but the LG LCD panel he'd inherit has been deemed to be aesthetically inappropriate by the lady of the house.
So that got me thinking about picking up a 17" Apple LCD from ebay. The question I have though is, can anyone tell me if I can power the screen from a regular power source instead of the ADC? I'm running a 64MB Radeon 9600 Pro in this machine (after the Geforce 7800GS died lol) which has ADC and DVI connections. But the ADC does not carry power. I know there's a mod you can perform on the card to get power to the ADC but my soldering is, as they say, teh sux0r.
So, in summary, can I get a video signal from the ADC to the Studio Display while powering it from somewhere else?
Thanks, Chris

I would suggest a DVI to ADC adapter from eBay, I don't know if Apple still sells them now, but i have seen a few on eBay that will power a 15", 17", 20", 22" and 23" Cinema Display. I don't know if they can power the 17" ADC CRT Here is a link with the info about the adapter.

Cool - thanks! I've got a few in my watch list now, I'll see how it goes.
Then I'll have to think what to do with the eMac. It's been a great machine and is running Tiger fine. It will be a shame to sell it especially as nobody wants CRTs anymore.

Hmm, might i suggest a mod? Take the LG LCD (if it's 17") and gut it and replace it with the CRT in the eMac. Less power consumption, better quality and the Lady of the house would be proud? Question, how does one piece of equipment become aesthetically inappropriate??? lol

Nano, if all else fails regarding finding a used ADC to DVI adapter ( I really like the eMac swap, very cool ) I know from experience that compUSA has them in stock for 99.99USD. Not cheap but available. Best of luck. Cheers, Chris

LOL, in terms of aesthetics, the Lady of the House is absolutely fine about anything made by Apple - she just objects to the beige box, generic PC type stuff which I have to hide from her in my study. So thats why the idea of placing the MDD in our son's room with a generic LCD screen was found to be objectionable. Make sense? Nope.
I thought about modding the eMac screen but the fact is, the 1Ghz G4 feels slower and less snappy than the dual 867MHz MDD (which has more RAM, better graphics I guess). Hence the reason for the swapout. I'm going to have a go at getting a screen and adapter from the ebay. Failing that, I'll think again..
