I just recently bought my new server consisting of a G3 B&W 450 Rev 2. Now the video card that came with it is a ixMicro Ultimate Rez #9720. Of what i have seen from xlr8yourmac.com, this is an 8meg card. That doesn't bother me as much as apparently this card will not let me install any OS other than 10.2. Is this the case or does this post belong under a different category relating to the machine or the OS problems? The OS i was trying to install was at least Panther or Tiger but each time i boot from the CD or DVD, it hangs after the grey apple logo with the spinning circle.

What about installing Panther or Tiger onto the hard drive using another Mac (with a newer video card), and then refit the drive in your G3 B&W with the ixMicro? I don't know if you can do this, but if you can its worth a try.

I wish i could do that ritalin, but my Sawtooth has a blown motherboard. I am waiting for the replacement to be sent so i have my G4 back in operation. The 6400 i have can't run X even if it tried. What i'm going to do is get a rage card and get at least Panther on it because i was able to do that before on a B&W. Then if i can wing it, i'll get Tiger on the system and upgrade the video card to one that is Tiger worthy and PCI based.

Well, i got a Rage 128 card and i was able to update to Panther. Then i updated to Tiger using the same card and wow, it worked. 10.4.8 using a Rage card and Apple says it can't be done. Oh well, now i'm running a Geforce 5200 PCI card now and without having to use the Quartz Extreme code, System profiler says it's already enabled. And this is on a PCI bus.
And as for the ixMicro card, i put it into the 6400 and it works like a charm. Better than the onboard 1 Meg video.

Oh well, now i'm running a Geforce 5200 PCI card now and without having to use the Quartz Extreme code, System profiler says it's already enabled. And this is on a PCI bus. Yes, Apple had to re-enable Quartz Extreme on the PCI bus with the introduction of PCI-Express Macs. This is because the PCI-E bus is based on the existing PCI system and is a change in the physical layer only — systems can be adapted to PCI Express without any change in software. Therefore Apple had to remove the software lock that disabled Quartz Extreme on the PCI/PCI-E bus in newer versions of OS X. Congrats on getting the G3 B&W working with Tiger.

cool, and thanks guys. This isn't the first G3 that i had to make work. Now all i have to do is get the server portion of this working.
