Hi there ;D My MDD FW800 seems having problem encoding videos. First, it can't finished encoding audio in iDVD from iMovie. Then it can't finish converting DV files to DiVX. This thing never happened to my Digital Audio before. My DA although underpowered seems more stable. And it kernel panicked while just capturing audio track of Thomas the Tank Engine ( I'm a big fan of those old English steam engines ;D) theme song from DVD via Audio Hijack. My primary suspect is the SONNET SATA controller and SATA boot drive. I will try to boot from the on-board ATA controller tonight and do everything there. If the problem goes away, then it probably the SATA card. If the problem persists, I may just sell this thing, buy a Digital Audio and Fastmac G4 card. As much as possible, I don't want to say goodbye to this FW800, in fact I just bought a MDD metal frame just to drill holes for my fan modes. I hope this problem gets fixed.

Kenji, Have you recently changed your ram, MDD's are really picky about the ram they use. My Dual 1.5 is rock solid, but I have a drawer full of ram that wont work including 4 x 512 sticks of ram from Apple. In fact the ram it is happy with is DDR 400 Corsair value ram, 2 x 1 gig sticks. Majority of problems with freezing on MDD's is ram related, followed by processor/logicboard and graphics card. Depending on what you have done to your system recently (& I figure you have done quite a bit), if you did not get freezes before, look to any changes you have made.

Hi aquamac,
Thanks for the RAM tip. The RAM sticks are all PC-2700 (Apacer and Buffalo) with hynix and samsung chips. The MDD is very stable at all things and is rock solid but had problem only in video encoding . However, I have a good news. I used the on-board IDE controller and PATA drive and installed OS X and applications. The iMovie file was still in a separate SATA drive. All went well. Using the PATA drive on the built-in IDE controller , video encoding was perfect. iDVD was blazingly fast, as well as DV-Divx conversion. I will try again for the last time booting from the SATA drive and do the stuffs from there and if the problem arises again, I guess I have the idea whats the culprit is. In the meantime, the MDD metal frame is arriving tonight so expect me to be busy drilling holes for the fan mode. ;D ( My professsor is in Bangkok for a week so I can freely use the power tools in our lab ;D
Regards
