For no apparent reason at all (I keep telling myself it's for when I end up with a Bluetooth-enabled device one day) I've decided to put the internal ports on my USB 2.0 PCI card to good use and plug in a USB Bluetooth adapter. From various research around the web, I've gotten the impression that OS X's built in Bluetooth drivers generally accept any kind of USB Bluetooth device as long as it's adherent to the spec - am I right on this? (Specifically, I was planning on getting this: www.cyber-blue.com/products_info.asp?id=381&code=AB)I hope I can use this - the dongles that are "officially" Mac compatible cost way too much for me...

i don't know if it's compatable. best way to find out is to buy it, plug it in, and see if it works. if not then take it back and try the d-link bluetooth module that they say works well with a mac. I have one and no drivers needed. it just works. though i have nothing to use with it, i have it just in case. edit: www.dlink.com/products/?pid=34and they are going for around $45 USD

I have found that there are sometimes slight problems with some "compatible" bluetooth dongles. I had the Belkin one that did not reconnect to my Apple Bluetoth keyboard. Swapped it for the D-Link one and all is fine again.

Hmm. Thanks for the heads up. In and around Toronto I've seen the D-Link dongle for as low as $45 CDN...but I've seen generic adapters for as low as $16. (Albeit, without BT 2.0+EDR support.) I think I'll take my chances on it - I have found blog posts from around the web saying that such adapters work okay with Macs without additional drivers; I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, I decided to pick it up today - I ended up opting for a different model, a type known only as ES-388. There's a listing for it here, and this listing for it apparently lists the range of Bluetooth devices it's compatible with. I got it for $19 CDN, much lower than a D-Link DBT-120 which I saw for $35, the lowest price I've seen for it yet. It's compatible with the v1.1 and v1.2 version of the Bluetooth spec, and the Mac sees it just fine. It shows up as "ISSCBTA" in the USB device section of System Profiler. Now all I need to do is to find a Bluetooth device to test it out...

Hi Rampancy,
Let us know how it goes with this dongle when you get some bluetooth peripherals. You need to run for a while to get the full picture.
