After being sidetracked with my trip to the repair centre, I've decided to press on in my pursuit of tinkering with the last concievable component that I think I can replace with reasonable ease - the PSU fans. Originally, I bought these aluminum fans for this purpose, but there was one problem - the dimensions of the fans actually weren't 60 x 60 x 25 mm - it was something like 62.5 x 62.5 x 20 mm. I guess they weren't measuring things right, anyway, they won't fit in the PSU because of that. Sadly, I know of no other fans available that can match the specs of the original AcBel Minebea fans. Does anyone out there know of any that can? Does anyone know of others who've done any quick and easy cooling mods for their PSU? Preferably, I don't want to deal with tin snips, the drill, and the Dremel tool. EDIT: I've just found these fans which should fit the bill, but at $21 each, that seems a little steep...

you probably can try filing off a little off the sides of the fans with a dremel, but that might take some time. If they are still under warrenty, take them back and see if they have fans that are the proper dimensions.

I thought about that, but the casing of the fans themselves are made out of solid aluminum. It'd be a real hassle to try and cut them down to size. Also, the store I bought them from doesn't do returns... When I tried to fit the two fans into the PSU, it was clear they wouldn't fit, and by a considerable margin at that. Oh well. I'm willing to part with them to someone who'll make good use of them (they'd be good for potential extra fans for intake or hot air extraction, I think).

Hey, as an aside, I noticed you're on the MacMod forums...why don't you put up some of your work there?

The second page I linked to (the StarTech fans) were the other set of fans I found that so far match or exceed the specs of the OEM Minebea PSU fans. I haven't bought them yet because they look way too expensive. The first page I linked to ( here) were the aluminum fans I bought but couldn't use in my PSU due to the futzed up dimensions. In case the link doesn't work, here's a pic and specs: Voltage/Current: 12 V, 0.2 A Airflow: 27 CFM Speed and Noise: 5000 rpm @ 30 dB Connector: 3-pin (3-pin to 4-pin adapter with pass-through Molex connection included) The make is advertised as OEM by Bigfoot (the company selling them) but the fan is actually manufactured by Thermaltake. Oh, and the frame is solid aluminum - the fan blades are chromed plastic. EDIT: in comparison, the specs for the original PSU fans are 5300rpm / 25CFM @ 38 dB.

Steve,
I sent you a PM, hopefully you got it...
And back on topic, I remember seeing some pictures of people who were able to somehow use 80 mm and 120 mm fans to help cool their PSU with the help of cardboard fittings...does anyone remember what they did and/or how they did it?
