It's designed for a 120MM fan. I used some 3M double-sided mounting tape (strong stuff) and cut four pieces for the four corners of the fan and stuck it to the grate. You can then mount the stock plastic shroud over the fan.

What do you mean by the "stock plastic shroud?" I wasn't aware that there were any pieces between the memory cage and the fan in a mac pro.
Also, you seem like you're familiar with the case components... my case didn't come with a front fan unit. If I buy the standard one, what does it attach to (if it attaches directly to the case, that's good, but if there's a component it attaches to i probably don't have it). Also, are the connections proprietary? If they are, I guess I could swap out the fans or modify the cables, right?

I see, the fan shroud on the back of the case is inside the memory cage. It's the gray part that extends out the back of it. I'm currently not using the RAM cage, so that is why I said that. The thing is, the stock fan mounts inside that shroud using rubber grommets, but they are very hard to get to and usually break when you remove the fan. My suggestion means you can remove the RAM cage easily without disconnecting the fan.
As for the front fan shroud, I would look for someone selling a used one as the new ones don't usually include the black plastic piece that it slides into. The black piece is what holds the speaker and it is very hard to find new (read: I haven't found one at all). If you find a used one, it might include the fans too. If you don't have the black piece, it will make it very difficult to mount it and probably won't look very stock.

Thanks for the information on this black holder thing. I will try to look into it. I wanted tu buy a front fan assembly, but it's quite expensive, and if it makes further complications, I might aswell just tinker something. mmm.
edit: by the way, I just mounted a back fan. Drilled four holes in the apple grill mesh thing and assembled with rubber grommets.
