Hey guys, I finally did it. I installed my full ATX GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard in my Mac Pro case. I also redid the water cooling system with some different routing and I cut out the inside of the front fan piece and installed the radiator inside it. I decided it would be easier and look better to cut the top tray rather than the bottom of the case in order to fit it. The other benefit is that the additional two sata connectors that would be used for the DVD drives are right where the tray is and would be covered up by it. Let me know what you guys think!! *Edited for new pics*

Hi all! Sorry, but I haven't read the thread completely, but I have a few questions... I have a Mac Pro enclosure, and I wanna fit a full ATX board into it. I've removed the metal fan thing that sits between the drive bay and the place where the PSU should be placed. My question is, how did you guys place the PSU? With glue, or with screws, or something like that? Mt PSU is the Corsair HX1000, and I can't figure out how to place it. Also the whole for the plug doesn't match up with the whole in the enclosure - what did you guys do about that? Another question is, the HDD bays... I'm going to use them, but theres a couple of leads there I don't know what is for. There is a plug that looks like some kinda SATA thingy, but it's too big for a SATA connector, and too small for a SATA POWER connector... And it says MOLEX on it... What's that for? Basically I need a guide how to fit the PSU and how to plug in the HDD's in the bays How you guys can help!

My PSU is just sitting there, I haven't secured it and it seems fine. My PSU also has the plug in the center, though a little too high, but the power cable still fits through the hole into the PSU, so no worries there. The HDD connector that you're talking about is an internal SAS connector. Unfortunately, to use the built-in wiring harness, you need to cut off the end of it and solder regular sata cables onto the ends (unless you have an internal SAS controller, then you can just connect it directly to it). If you don't feel like doing the soldering (I can't blame you, it sucks), I think there might be someone on this forum that will do it for you for a fee, or you can remove the whole harness and just use standard sata data/power cables. Good luck.

Blacknight, congrats! another fine looking macpro case... I mentioned back when i first bought the front fans Thats a dual 120 rad would fit nice inside it.. and with its placement leaves lots of room for the fans to attach to the rad. you've pulled it off very nicly... the only thing i'd have done different (well.. how i saw it done back when) was using a 5.1/2" drive bay pump and res and lining up the fill point with a hole in the top of the case. Doesn't make any difference really, that looks great! what GPU is that?
job well done! some more angled photos would be cool.

This is the same case that I did before, I just swapped motherboards. The GPU is a Radeon HD3870X2 with Danger Den full coverage waterblock. The radiator doesn't fit without quite a bit of modification. I had to remove the PCI guide and air flow "ramp" thing, plus it sits a little bit too high, so I had to also cut out the top section of the shroud and make a huge hole in the plate covering the WI-FI antennae. Basically I only used the back section of the metal plate on the bottom and cut the black plastic thing so I could still slide the fan thing in. The radiator actually sits in the opening created from the whole in the bottom of the case and sticks out slightly under the case.
Also, under the "Apple Heat Sink Cover" there is another fan mounted on the radiator from the back side of it for added airflow over the CPU/RAM. I wanted to put one on the top section, but then I'd have to cut a hole out of the Heat Sink Cover to fit it and I didn't think that would look very nice.
Thanks for the kind words. I assume by more angle shots that your meaning like your avatar pic, right? Or are you referring to an angle shot towards the front?

Just more... youve done a great job there, show it off a little.. I'm considering the 880 Hiper as i'm unsure my 620 hiper will power two GPU's youve got it in there very nicly.. it looks a little longer then the 620watt. did you have any issues? I hope to mod my MacPro psu and use the gutts from the 880 in the 1000watt Macpro PSU.... show us more.. we really should create a gallery thread... :-p J.

I agree on the gallary thread. I know mine may look good, but there are quite a few in this thread and others that go unnoticed since it's been so long and not many go through the 29 pages. I'd love to take more pics, but my iphone camera kinda sux as you can see. I really need to just buy a quality digicam. Might be a while though. I'll try to get some more crappy (eh, I mean decent) shots from my iPhone to quench your thirst. Maybe I'll be the one to start the gallery thread.
As far as the PSU, I don't know how long the 620 is, so I don't know how much bigger the 880 is, but I knew that it was going to be much too long to fit with the top fan installed. The back of the PSU comes to about 1-1.5 inches from the back of the DVD tray. When I saw that you were considering the MacPro PSU, I started looking around for wiring diagrams to see if I could wire it up. Then I ended up buying the hyper 880 and have been quite happy since. As far as issues with it, I didn't have any, though the ATX cable was kinda short (like it is with most PSUs) and it wasn't modular. Once I cut up the top shelf though, these were not issues anymore. The opening in the shelf made it easier to feed cables behind the motherboard, including the ATX cable.

I found that... I used an ATX extension cable which i modded for the front panel power switch.. my ATX cable is routed like it was with my M-ATX (see Aqua-Macs first Hack-Pro shots) cutting the shelf helped alot.. only my ATX cable is routed through the hole behind the CD/DVD drive bays. I wanted the 880 when i had my DQ6. My macpro case arrived and the penny dropped... my DQ6 wasnt gonna fit (how wrong i was) so i had to drop down to the 620 so i could afford the DS2R. The Hiper PSU's are great! really cant fault them.. I bought a faulty Mac Pro PSU just for the alu cover to complete its stock look. with its design.. i now hope to be able to remove 3 sides of the PSU.. remove the MacPro PSU guts and fit the hiper using the Apple power connector socket.. like the idea of being able to slide out the PSU.
The iphone can be a let down huh.. i find if i shine my desk lamp directly at my case and take the photos from the lamps angle the shots come out less grainy..

I decided to use my fluorescent utility light and shine it in while taking some more pics. I put them up in the new Mac Pro/G5 Case Conversion Gallery thread. Check them out if you'd like. Also, people should start posting their pics in that thread. This thread is starting to get way too long for new people to look at.

It always good to read before asking, because lot of topics have already been discussed before, specially by aqua.
