This just in on Hardmac,
"Say ByeBye To CPU Upgrade Cards For Macs".
"Together with the DVD that should disappear in the coming months/years, there is another type of products that should be "End of Life" very soon: CPU upgrade cards. They have been during many years the only way to upgrade older Macs, since it was impossible to directly exchange CPU. They also have been the topic of many of our articles (installation, overclocking, etc...) Already, transition to the G5 was a huge slow down in their development, the cost of the CPU itself together with the required R&D investment would have made it very risky and expensive for CPU upgrade cards developers. The official migration towards Intel CPU has probably seal their destiny. One would be able to buy an Intel CPU from any Computer shops to upgrade its socket-based CPU MacIntel (except if Apple is preventing such operation by modifying firmwares). I personally want to thank a company, Mactel (premonition), which does not exist anymore, but allowed me to have the fastest Mac on the planet for a couple of weeks. At that time, it was a PM 7600 upgraded with a PowerJolt G3 250/167 overclocked @ 325/325 MHz, whereas the fastest PMG3 available from Apple was then running at 266MHz... It was in July 1998, Macbidouille, neither hardmac, were on the web yet, but the story was mentioned on XLR8yourmac".

I couldn't understand by which upgrade cards they meant by. Is this for all macs or just for the older ones? I thought companies like Sonnet and Powerlogix were making a killing creating these cards. Well, i guess i should either buy a G5 or just get my dual 1.8 for my Quicksilver project now then before it's too late.

I think they mean both Powerlogix & Giga Designs. I guess they will both continue to produce as long as there is a market. But eventually it will diminish unfortunately. I for one love making old macs go faster.
