Hi Roninsw,
I saw you post on Strangedogs, about the same question. Gotoh is correct, many people have had problems with the MDD and GF 6800GT. For this reason it is now difficult to recommend for the MDD, but works well in the G5 and Digital Audio/Quicksiver. Maybe the reason I did not have the same problems as others is because my card was actually an Ultra, which I changed to a GT! It was also Dual DVI with 1 TMDS chip, which meant when flashed with Arti's rom gave Dual DVI outputs. It is thought that the GT'S generally have a problem with the MDD northbridge. The Ultra that I used has not been available for sometime, however there are now some much better options around for the MDD anyway, both Ruby or Gotoh at strange dogs can supply you with a 7800GS, WHICH IS A FASTER CARD ANYWAY! I think the suggestion you made using the 9800 in the MDD & the 6800GT in the G5 seems a better option. There are also the X800 XT alternatives if you don't need DVI, AS THEY ONLY WORK WITH Dual VGA.
I hope this sorts out the confusion,
Regards, Steve.

All computers have a Northbrige chip & Southbridge chip on the motherboard/logicboard.In Northbridge/Southbridge chipset architecture designs, the Northbridge is the chip or chips that connect a CPU to memory, the PCI bus, Level 2 cache and AGP activities. The Northbridge chips communicate with the CPU through the FSB. The Northbridge chip is one of two chips that control the functions of the chipset. The other is the Southbridge. The Northbridge can consist of more than one discrete chip while the Southbridge is typically only one discrete chip.
On the matter of the best card for a MDD, there are the following choices:
Nvidia GF7800GS, Both working DVI/VGA Only currently available through Gotoh(Europe) Ruby Tuesday(US) & Tome Japan(Asia). All can be contacted through Strangedogs to buy a card.
Nvidia GF6600GT, Can be Dual DVI or DVI/VGA depending on the card chosen. These again are available from the strangedogs crew.
ATI X800XT, Dual VGA OR VGA/TV, You can flash this yourself using the reduced rom from strangedogs downloads area. Read the large thread on flashing X800 at strangedogs. You can use X800GT & flash to XT, I have one of these for sale if you are interested, fully tested. PM me if you are interested.
ATI Fire GL X3, Perfect for the MDD Dual DVI, can be flashed with the reduced X800XT rom from strangedogs, fully functional, but, being a PRO card it's £500!
ATI 9800, You can flash yourself.
That's about it for the MDD, It's possibly the G4 with the most potential, but annoyingly it is limited with processor upgrades & the 6800GT still remains an enigma.
Hope this helps,
aquamac.
