...is there no way to get the full 512megs? i found one of those cards on ebay and a radeon x800xt platinum ed. too. the gainward fits only with "optical drive bay mods" but the x800 is (maybe) too noisy. i`d like too push my 2.0ghz quicksilver with radeon x800 xt power ( ;D ) ... i think the gainward 20pp is the best card for the mdd/fw800. (?) which one is your favorite?

I am bringing back a dead post. I just purchased a BFG 7800GS OC 256mb card for my FW800 Dual 1.42. The flash went well and the card performs spectacular. My xbench graphic scores are way up. The addition of this card has seemed to bring my other scores down a tad. My overall score is now about a point less than when I had the Radeon 9600XT in my machine. I am thinking about selling the 7800gs and going back to the 9600xt.

Hi Ginz111
If you are using xbench, then you are wasting your time. Use either Open GL Viewer or Openmark to test Graphics Cards. Xbench is very outdated and useless for graphics cards. Also, the 7800 GS can be run at higher clock speeds. Do you know what speeds your rom is running?

I am using the 7800 GS AGP (G70) overclocked version 425/625 MHz rom, since this card is one of the factory overclocked ones. My graphics scores are not down in Xbench, they are up. The problem is the 7800 took my overall xbench score down a point. I was thinking I should stick with the 7800 and when I do get to the overclocking of the 1.42 that will make up the difference in the score. My goal is to get a score of at least 100 in Xbench. I am not really looking to benchmark just the graphics but the whole machine. Should I still stay away from Xbench? Thanks again Aqua. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post. Carl

Hi Ginz111,
If you want to really speed up your machine and get it over 100, then get 2 identical HDD's and RAID them into a stripe with Disk Utility. Make them Sata and get a bootable Sonnet Sata card - you will feel like you just put a 2 gig processor in there. That makes a big difference to MDD's! XBench is OK for CPU & hard disk but is rubbish for new graphics cards. It has not been updated since GeForce 4 !! so has no idea really the capabilities of modern cards. Use Open GL Extensions Viewer, it's updated every time a new card comes out!

I already went the sonnet raptor sata raid route. I also added the 7800gs and still hovering around 81 in xbench overall score. With the 9600XT I was just a c-hair shy of 82. Any other speed tips other than overclocking?

Hmm,
Well you should be able to hit 1.5 gigs with an overclock easily with the 1.42 - even 1.25's will do this but I can understand you possibly not wanting to try that. Well you could do 4 Raptor Raid, I did try that and it flew, but that is probably about the limit. I take it you have the 1.67 bus anyway.

Yes I have the 167 bus. So I can run two sonnet sata cards at the same time? I am just reluctant to do the overclock. I just don't want to screw it up. Don't get me wrong I am fully capable of doing it it's just that I don't trust myself yet. : ) I also may have access to the Sonnet dual 1.8 upgrade processor for a reasonable price so I may go that route also.

The Sonnet 1.8 gig would be a nice move. Would run much cooler too - not easy to get hold of now though.

Do you think I will achieve benchmarks scores equal or better than you received on some of your mdd's you have oc'd if I go with the sonnet dual 1.8? I know you guys think I am crazy for wasting my time with this dino. But it's such a great machine I want it to be useful for as long as possible. PowerPC forever!

I think the reason my scores went down when I added the 7800 gs is because of heat. I installed a cooler master fan at the rear of the case behind the processor like aquamac and that made a difference in the case temps and made my xbench scores more stable. Still down a bit but at least they have stabilized now.

Here is my OpenMark score with the BFG 7800gs 256mb OC. Not to shabby for a dino.

I just openMarked my new BFG 7800gsOC that I installed last night, on my dual 2.0 g5. This is factory overclocked to 475 according to the guy I bought it from, but I'm not sure if it runs on the same clock speed with the flashed mac rom. I scored an 11063, but granted that was on 1920x1080 rez. How did you bench a 7800GT on a G4?
