Cool! I'll look into those fans when I'm at work (waiting for the DLR right now). I'll be reusing my 1gb XFX 4870 graphics cards that I flashed to work in a Mac Pro. I'll probably upgrade to a 5870 or two when Apple releases drivers for them.

I recently bought one of these CPU coolers for my next project (still have not quite worked out what that is yet). It is beautifully made: www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-004-PL&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395It is a great CPU cooler. I teamed it up with 2 x Gentle Typhoon 120 mm (800 rpm) fans in a push/pull setup. With a core i7 @ 4 gigs you will see a cpu idle temp of around 39 degrees C. It does not even feel warm!! I have this running on a Asus P6T6 Workstation board. The gap between the PC back ports and the inside back of a mac pro case is around 22 mm (7/8") incidentally. If you need any more info, just post back.

Yeah that's the same heatsink I was planning to buy. The megahalems are meant to be awesome. I'll probably just get the normal grey ones since they're £17 cheaper and have identical cooling ability.
I've been looking at pirloui's photos but can't work out how big the gap between the back of the board and the existing port holes is. pirloui, any chance you could either measure the gap or upload a higher resolution picture so that I can try to measure it digitally?

Ok, I'm even more sold on building an i7 hackintosh into my Mac Pro's case. Apple just added a 3.33GHz option to their Quad core Mac Pro line and are charging $1200 for it. The 2009 Mac Pros were overpriced when they were released - Apple had obviously increased their profit margins by ~$1000 per machine. They're now even more overpriced and instead of improving their pricing structure by having faster processors at the same price points, they've just added a faster processor at a higher price point. Since they've bothered to do this, it probably means there won't be any new Mac Pros for at least around six months. The way Apple is going with their pricing is now clear. They're pushing the prices down on their consumer machines and laptops and are making up for their loss in profit margins by jacking up the Mac Pro profit margins since a large number of Mac Pros are bought by businesses who will not care so much or even notice the bad value.

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster
I'm nearly done with my hack pro, but the front audio continues to plague me.... I know that the front panel audio works as I've tested it independently. I know that the mobo header did work a month ago
I've got my cable soldered as follows Right channel - 4th wire (grey) Left channel - 3rd wire (black) Ground - 2nd wire (brown)
I think the purple is jack_sense, and the last black is a ground with cable shielding. Does the 5th wire (black) need to be hooked to the ground header on the mobo?
I've tried countless different combinations, but can't get it to work on either Win 7 or SL
Also, does JackSense work for anyone?
My mobo Asus P5N7A

Hi, I never managed to get sense working, but I did get audio out of both mac pro and G5 cases by connecting L & R channels to the motherboard header. I plugged in a pair of phones into the socket and experimented inside the case connecting various wires till I got both channels working (checked the balance control to make sure left was left) - not very scientific I know but it got the job done. I think the sense connections are software controlled.

I've taken the plunge. I ordered all the parts yesterday and most of them arrived today. Unfortunately the fans won't get here until next week because of the lying useless idiots at Overclockers.
I've now spent the last two or three hours taking apart my Mac Pro and finally have it in shell form. Now to begin the modding and thus the irreversible stuff!!

Board is in and is setting now. Had a mild panic when I'd put the bond stuff on the stand offs to put in and realised that one of the stand offs couldn't go due to the rear case screw by the PCIe slots.

I'm taking loads of pics as I go, no worries. Unfortunately I keep being held up with compulsory "christmas eve" time with the better half. :-(
I've been battling with the PSU fan divider thingy. I've managed to get all the screws and bolts out but have no idea how to get the welded bits off. I'm thinking I'm going to have to resort to a dremel for those but don't know how that'll work on the underside pair which I can't see.

I ended up dremeling as well, but watch out that you don't cause a ripple in the top panel of the case trying to bend the thing.

I've got no idea how to get this d**ned thing out. I've gone through loads of dremel bits of varying sorts trying to attack either the metal work or the two visible pop rivets. Nothing seems to work.

I've managed to get the two lower pop rivets out and the rest of it looks like it's been in a serious car crash. Still can't get the last two d**ned rivets out though and I have nothing with which to drill them out at that angle.

GOT THE BUGGER!! Here's what it now looks like... do you think Apple will replace it under Applecare?? My blood, tears and sweat have now literally gone into this machine. Attachments:

Ahh, really freaking out now. Office is a tip and I don't have a working desktop right now. I've got it to boot up and detect my drive but alas my Mac Pro's HDD won't boot. I'd installed myhack on it before taking it apart so I hoped it would. Seeing the cable mess and worrying about how to do the rear ports has reminded me about why I switched to Macs in the first place but then again, I needed a faster machine and simply couldn't afford the new Mac Pros. I know things will be better when I get it done but it really is depressing seeing it all like that at the moment. Didn't help that I'd managed to put a female molex plug on the sata harness and couldn't find a USB board connector for ages so couldn't plug in my keyboard!
