I know it's late in saying so, but that slot load drive is spot on. Perfect solution to the problem. It was also an idea that I had toyed with in my head, wasn't sure it was going to work, but this clinches it. By the way Ritalin, I've been wanting to replace my powersupply with a modular supply similiar to the one you loaded up, but the depth of the existing drive bay prevents it from happening. This setup provides a whole new solution. Great work man.

This setup provides a whole new solution. Great work man. Here is an even later reply! The hardest part of the project was probably fitting the slot loading drive. It was incredibly tricky measuring and cutting the slot in exactly the right place, and with only the one escutcheon available to me there was no room for error. The escutcheon it self is made from three layers of materials. To make a neat cut you will need to separate the parts and cut them individually. For the inner 'paper like' material I used a sharp craft knife. For the plastic I used the finest cutting wheel available for my Dremile. Using this (especially on the outer plastic) patience is a real must! Try and cut too quickly and you end up with a molten mess! Cut a little and let the plastic cool, Cut a little and let the plastic cool... Alternatively, you could use a tray loading laptop optical drive. It would still solve the internal size problem without the need to cut the slot. The only drawback is I don't know of an Apple supported/shipped laptop tray loader. That's not to say it wouldn't work (Toast etc would still work) just no burn support in iDVD. However I believe hacks are available.
