I've decided to gut the iMac and fit an LCD screen, new M/B and Intel CPU.
I have a spare E6300 CPU and mATX M/B combo laying around doing nothing (it's a long story), so I will use them. I would have rather used an ITX board as the mATX will be a tight fit. Anyway ITX seem expensive and I already have the mATX, so the mATX it shall be.
I've just finished measuring up for the M/B tray. I will make a start fabricating it tomorrow, that's if i'm not too busy at work.
This looks superb!! What a fantastic fit. Looks like the mainboard was made for it. Can't wait to see the thing all powered up with OSX 86 on the screen. One thing is for sure, this must be the nicest, most powerful imac around! LCD also looks to be a great fit, make sure you update us when this is up & running with more pics.
Well I didn't choose the motherboard, but luckily it gone in quite well. Given a choice I would have probably gone for an Asus P5L-MX, it's an inch and half narrower, or if money was no object an mini-ITX board. As is I can still use 3 of the expansion slots (2 x PCI-E, 1x PCI). The last PCI and HDMR slot are in accessible. I'm busy this week but I should be able to finish the job the week after. For now, to see if I can make it boot, I may borrow a hard disk from my other machine.
