As discovered by Nvflash on strangedogs, the open GL drivers from the latest Intel 10.4.8 update are more up to date than the Power PC ones from the same update.
Only try this out on a drive that is not your main drive to start with, you have been warned!
If any one is interested in trying this out, here are the instructions:
1. Install a fresh copy of 10.4 & update it in the normal way to 10.4.8. Best to install this onto an external hard drive.
2. Download from Apple, the latest combined updates for the 10.4.8 Intel & PPC from the Apple
downloads section. It must be these (the biggest) as this will not work with any others.
3.Open the disk images updates & drag the packages to the desktop. You can delete the disk images now if you want.
4.Right click the Intel package and click Show package contents.
5.Delete MacOSXUPDCombo10.4.8Intel.dist.
6.Right click the PPC package and click Show package contents
7.Drag the MacOSXUPDCombo10.4.8PPC.dist into the Intel package where you just deleted the the Intel.dist.
8.You can delete the partially empty PPC package now.
9.You should be left with the Intel package that contains the PPC.dist, rename this distribution: MacOSXUPDCombo10.4.8Intel.dist.
10.Boot to your regular system & plug in your external drive with the fresh copy of 10.4.8 on it.
11. While booted from your regular system, install the hacked update onto the EXTERNAL hard drive. You are given the option during the install of which drive you wish to install on, make sure you choose the external.
12 Repair the permissions on the external disk & run Ony X on it.
13.Copy the System UI Server onto the external disk fom your regular disk. This can be found at System/Library/Core Services/System UI Server.
14.Boot to the external disk.
15.Replace the System UI Server with the one you just copied.
16.Repair permissions & Ony X.
17.Enjoy your new drivers!
Anyone with 7800GS cards will be pleased to have their cards recognised correctly and to have dashboard working.
As a footnote, this is only really necessary if you are running or intend to install the most recent graphics cards ie, those that are AGP varients of PCI-E or have a PCI-E system G5.
Also these updates may or maynot be part of 10.4.9 when it ships. If not, the process may have to be repeated with the 10.4.9 updates. However for enthusiasts who wish to keep up with the latest drivers for their hardware (even if Apple are not intertested in you doing so) this remains an interesting hack, & one that is now running flawlessly on both G4 & G5.
