Ok, that makes sense. Am I correct in thinking the non Gainward 7800GS AGP cards are 16 pipe cards with lower spec memory and possibly VGA/DVI not dual DVI e.g. close to the Nvidia reference board? That would explain large differences between the two 'modified' Mac ROMs. This would be no surprise as Gainward golden sample boards veer from the Nvidia reference design by a wide margin, and would require very different ROMs to the reference boards. The reason I suggest looking for the ROM of the 8156 Bliss is that I believe it's also a non reference design (e.g. 7800GT core, twin DVI, high spec memory), like the 512MB Bliss but with 256MB of memory. Comparing the two may shed light on how memory size is controlled in the ROM. The original ROM from 7685 Bliss (or XFX etc) would be of less use, this is because it is a reference design board and very different to the 256MB/512MB golden sample Bliss cards.
Lets hope guitarmkndude gets the 256MB 7800 Golden Sample.
The reason I made the Quadro comment is that we are told Quadros and GeForce cards are optimized for different consumer requirements, Quadros for precision and GeForce for speed (this is an over simplification). However this could be a crock of marketing *£$! if you know what I mean.

Hi Ritalin, You raise a very valid point about the Gainward 256, if guitarmkndude did get a card, a comparison between the two PC roms could infact could be just what we need. Your point about the Quadro may be right too, possibly with regard to games, they may end up a bit slower. I guess I'm more interested in this from a learning about roms point of view than expecting a huge increase in speed of the card I have. Let me know when you have finished your java exam & have more time, by the way, GOOD LUCK, although as in most of these cases luck has little to do with it.

Remember that to some degree I'm guessing as to the configuration of this card. The GPU could be a 7800GS, 7800GT or a 7900GT. Be prepared to sell the card on if necessary. EDIT: Here is a link to a supplier- www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=325500

Also bare in mind that, the card will not fit in a MDD without some serious fan/heatsink mods like the ones I detailed on page 1 of this post. Other than that were rooting for you.

Some more Gainward/MDD News: Thanks to NvFlash over at strangedogs, the Gainward Bliss 7800 GS 512 is starting to come together. He worked out a way to get the latest intel drivers to work with the Power PC 10.4.8 update. The nvidia drivers for the intel update contain info for more graphics cards than the Power PC update. This allows the 7800 GS to be correctly identified and the correct open GL engine to be used. Dashboard now works with this card:

Dashboard now works with this card Ah, brilliant - you mean dashboard now plays properly without the patcher? That's cool stuff. Do you have a link to the tweaks that get this working? I'd like to give it a try with my 7800GS on a backup install of OS X!
