Hi aquamac, I'm drooling over your MDD ;D I notived you used the two pin connector near the CPU daughter card. Is this for a fan? If yes, is the fan using this also controllable by a sensor like the 120 mm fan? There is also another spare two pin connector near the airport card slot, I presume this is for a fan, is this also controlled by a sensor? Thanks

Hi Guys,
The answer to your question is yes, all fan connectors on the logic board are software controlled in OS X.
Only FW800 has the one next to the processors but all MDD's have a spare next to the Airport card. I rewired a PCI slot fan to a two pin connector at the top, the lower one I used for the twin 60 x 60 fans at the back of the case. I am running the twin 80 mm fans that are on the radiators to the connector where the 120mm fan was.
The 120 fan is now connected to 7 volts as is the top front fan. I modded the fan kext to cut in at 42 degrees (rarely happens as being watercooled the computer idles at 33 degrees). All in all I'm pretty pleased!
These two connectors were probably used by Apple during testing prototypes, especially the FW800 which was always going to have faster processors. But in the end the G5 came along & that was the end of that!

Hello aquamac,
I have seen pictures of Mobo FW800 with 2 fan connectors near the Airport card, one of each side of the card. I didn't know the was also one near the Proc on the Mobo. So in total, there are 4 fans connectors ? Anyway, that's good to know that all the fans can be controlled by softwarein OSX . Thanks.

Hi bb,
Definitely worth taking advantage of, from the point of quietness!
Oh, by the way, I have 4 on my FW800.
One is driving the Watercooler fans One drives the CD drive fan One drived the rear fans One drives a PCI slot fan

The answer to your question is yes, all fan connectors on the logic board are software controlled in OS X. Interesting - on my board, the fan pins up near the Airport card are not software controlled; they provide a constant 12V. The ones near the CPU (and obviously the main connectors for the 120mm fan) are software controlled with AppleFan.kext. I wonder if it's my machine that's the oddity?
