Just a short question: Is it necessary to remove the CPU board first before removing the motherboard? Or can the motherboard be removed from the case together with the CPU board? (of course, after unscrewing the heatsink) ;D

Hi Kenji,
You must completely remove the CPU daughter card before you can move the logicboard. You need also to remove the black plastic CPU retainer. Trying to slide the board back with the retainer in place can damage the surface mount components nearby.

Thanks aquamac. I asked this because I might remove the logicboard in the near future for some case mods. This is my first time to deal with MDD although I've had past mod experiences with the earlier Powermacs G4 and G3.

One more thing aquamac, I saw in one of your links that the CPU daughtercard was removed first followed by the black plastic retainer (according to the guy who did the mod) . If I'm not mistaken, the retainer keeps the CPU daughtercard in place so it should be removed first followed by the CPU daughtercard, is that right? I'm a bit confused

When you install from scratch, first the MOBO , then the retainer on the MOBO and then the Daughter bord with the Proc(s) which has to be inserted in the retainer before lowing it down and clipped onto the Proc connector on the MOBO . I hope you understand what I mean. Otherwise I will take those days some pictures, cause I will take out my Dual proc to try to stabilize at 1,55V @1,5Ghz
