I have a DP 2.5 GHz air cooled G5 (yes, it's modded) and i'm wondering, instead of using those blasted Delta tri-blade fans, what other fans can i use that is hooked up to their own power source?
I am looking for 4 - 92mm fans that i can hook up to a 3 pin fanbus. Also a couple of 80mm fans to replace the hard drive and PCI slot fans.
They have to have a large CFM rating but low dB so that they will be quiet and don't make the machine sound like a jet engine 24/7.
Reason why i am asking this is because the stock fans i have now, each time i start up any program, they rev up to full then calm down, but it is annoying. My MDD was quieter when i put in some aftermarket fans. So i am wanting to do the same with my G5.
Hopefully this won't mess with the temperature readings that badly that it will cause the mac to go into a freak whenever the original fans aren't in the machine.
That molex to 3 pin adapter should work perfectly. I don't know if you noticed but Silenx also offers that same 92 mm fan with a thermistor attached so they will adjust speed accordingly in relation to temp. You just place the temp probe near what ever component you want to control the fan speed.
I want to stay away from the thermally controlled fans. Since the delta's in this thing right now are that way and every time i load a program, the fans go from silent to screaming in 2 seconds flat. So the less noise i hear from this beast, the better. Also, found another power station, but some people are saying that after a few months, they burn out.
I gotcha on the thermally controlled fans. You'll never hear the Silenx As for that bitspower extension, I'm betting that they burn out because if you were to populate all 4 molex plugs with that fans that actually need molex plugs like the big, bad deltas or the like the amperage draw would be almost dangerous. What most people forget is that the power rating of a fan is once it is up and running. Start up draw is considerably more. I have a pair of Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-31 fans (5400 RPM, 150.3 CFM) that are rated at 1.13 amps running but 2.69 amps start-up. Four of those little buggers would pull 10.76 amps/129.12 watts at power up! I imagine that might smoke the single molex plug feeding the extension (and all the extensions guts) on power up! With the silenx fans I wouldn't worry
