I have some problems modding a GTX275 to FX 5800. First me and blitzkrieg tried to modify the GTX275 bios closely to an FX 5800 more exactly the Device ID. We flashed 8-9 times but no success. The card still is recognized as a GeForce even inside the bios we put the FX 5800 ID in different places, GPU-Z doesn't show any differences. We also tried to flash the card with an original FX5800 bios from HP founded on internet. Luckily the card was recognized as a Quadro FX 5800 but i have artifacts all over the monitor and GPU-Z show 896 MB instead 1792 MB. Can you please give as some suggestions what to do what to modify? BTW we also tried to modify the FX 5800 some frequency and timingsets with nibitor but no luck still artifact al over the monitor.
We found and changed the device id of the 275 bios(05 E6) with the QFX5800 one(05 FD) in three places without succes. Before flashing, we also modified the checksum in Nibitor. In NvFlash the card asked to agree three times, so the device id was changed, but in windows, the os still recognized as 275. After that, we modified the 275 bios with the first part of the 5800 one, like you, Aqua, did on your 3700 bios. The card was dead.Luckily my friend have two PCI-E slots so we managed to restore the original bios.
Maybe we'll have some luck with the 5800 bios, which flashed directly works ,but with artefacts.
Perhaps fixing some memory mismatches which are between the two bioses, would work and do the magic?
Edit: the screenshot was made flashing the Quadro FX5800 rom onto the GFX275 card directly, no softstrapping, no changes. So, it seems that IS possible to biosmod the g200 series into Quadro FX5800.With some adjustements from someone who knows how to modify the 5800 bios in hex at a low level, I think were heading to another era

Did you try moving over the memory registers from the 275 bios to the 5800? Actually, I am surprised this worked at all so you have done well there. Soft strapping will not work without an enormous amount of changing. I think your best bet is to check the memory mismatches with Nibitor and make a note of the ones that are different. Do you have a picture of the artefacts and are you able to install the Quadro drivers?
Hy Aqua, indeed we tried to move the memory registers from the 275 bios to 5800 but we encountered a problem:
Looks like the 275 entries are fewer than these of the 5800 bios, so i filled the missing entries with zeros.I don' t know if i did right doing so, maybe the right solution would be to modify the entirely part of the (5800) rom in the part which is responsible for memory entries, to match the number of the 275.Any clue?
About a screenshot with the artifacts from flashing and your question regarding installation of the quadro driver, i'll let Marius respond, he owns the card, and i dunno if he tried to install the Nvidia driver. From this screenshot it seems that the system installed sucesfully its drivers:
Just found out my X58 motherboard cannot boot a windows startup disk!!!!!*@$ Even a USB floppy is no go. I was going to have a play around with a GTX 285 and the 5800 rom. I am going to have to find another PC. It does not help that Nibitor does not really support FX 5800, reading the clocks wrong as soon as you change the device id. Have you tried reducing the clocks on the 5800 rom? Mind you as Nibitor does not read the clock properly it will have to be done manually. EDIT: Interestingly, if you manually change the FX 5800 device id to the same 05E3 (GTX 285 DEV ID) then Nibitor will read the clock speeds correctly in the 5800 rom and they can be adjusted. Just don't forget to change this back to 05FD before flashing.
The board id of my GTX 285 is identical to that of the FX 5800 rom @ 2823
We wore using this method, we'v changed the FX5800.rom Device ID to the Device ID of the GTX275 to see the clocks and timingset correctly and after that we'v changed back to 05FD. It is a bad thing that nibitor doesn't know about FX x800 roms. BTW we didn't underclock the bios. Correct me if I'm wrong but I found out that FX 5800 clocks are already smaller then my GTX275. But we will try out more down clock if it's necessary .
Can there be an incompatibility between the FX5800.rom and the ports of the card? My GTX275 has a HDMI port, a DVi and a VGA port and the real FX 5800 has a DVi, 2 display ports and one 3D stereo port which looks like an S-video port.
There is a possibility that there may be some incompatibility between the rom and your ports but I don't think that is your problem with the artifacts. That problem would more likely manifest itself with one of your ports not working than causing glitches in your desktop.
If I get time I will give my GTX 285 a flash over the weekend, if I cannot find time I am sure I will have a go over Easter as I have a week off work. You are right, the clocks of the Quadro are significantly lower than your GTX 275, however when I flashed a number of 7800 GTX's to Quadro FX 4500's, I found that although the clocks were lower, the card emitted just as much heat indicating that the hardware was working hard. I still think your problems may be memory based, for instance, the 4800 rom is looking for plenty more memory than your 275 has onboard!
No sorry, I have been too busy on other projects and have only just managed to get hold of a windows startup disk this weekend. So at least now I am able to have a look at it but due to work commitments and others, I still cannot say when I can devote a load of time to it I am afraid.
I'm new on these forums, but I've been reading these posts with alot of enthousiasm^^ Currently I'm trying very hard to build a cheap Solid Works system, and I already own a Geforce 275GTX. Well let's get to the point:
Aquamac suggested that the FX5800 bios perhaps needs more memory than the Geforce 275GTX can provide. Well the specific model GTX275 I own has 1792MB of DDR3 memory onboard, and the FX5800 has an astonishing 4GB of memory onboard. However the FX4800 is also GT200 based, and it has only 1,5gb of DDR3 onboard. So my idea was to try and flash my GTX275 1792MB to a Quadro FX4800 1500MB
Any suggestions whether is would be possible? or perhaps anyone has an idea where to find a 4800 bios?
In the meantime I will try to flash my bios to the FX5800, perhaps the extra MB's of memory on my card will stop the artifacting^^
If we can pull this off, it'll be a blow to nvidia's whole quadro scam! Regards, J
Edit: Oh lol I see now your Geforce also has 1792 MB of ram... well I will try anyway see if a encounter any artifacting
I tried to do the 5800FX flash, but it failed... the artefacts made use of the computer impossible. Then I found a 4800FX bios (from our friends over at Hewlett and Packard) and tried flash that one on the hypothesis from my last post. Well with the 4800FX bios it doesn't give any artefacts! Windows recognises the videocard as an Nvidia Quadro 4800FX, and currently I'm installing the drivers.
Considering the nvidia Quadro FX 4800 has 1,5 GB of memory I believe the artefacts on the FX5800 were indeed a memory related problem like Aquamac suggested. This would mean the moderation to FX4800 would only be possible on a 1792MB 275GTX.
Anyway considering the fact that the 4800FX quadro is a very expensive workstation card I'm quite pleased so far. Well I think we can start doing benchmarks now^^
