This might be a stretch, But what about using the eraser wheel the they use in the automotive repair shops? They use them for taking decals and pin stripes off, I bet after a good soak & with the wheel, taking off the paint would be effortless. Well after months of inactivity on the Quicksilver project I finally made a start yesterday! I've stripped the case down. I now have a pile of bits that will be going in the bin: PPC logicboard, RAM, PATA Apple hard drive, powersupply, CD drive, modem... etc With the plastics off I have now removed the years of dust, nicotine, miscellaneous little stickers and scuff marks. The thing doesn't look too shabby now. ;D Having experience restoring the plastics on my 1983 Honda XL600 tells me not to use the eraser wheel, they are best left in the hands of the experienced. Anyhow, for the moment I will leave the plastics as standard. I am going to concentrate on the internal hardware. Bored with the ease at which you can get OSX running on Intel CPUs and chipsets, I have decided to use a AMD Phenom CPU and a nVidia chipset based motherboard. I am also going to use an ATI GPU just to add to the challenge as nVidia GPUs seem to be the easier option. Back to the plastics, I've gone off the idea off black and am now considering a more cheery colour scheme, perhaps white, suggestions welcome.

Yup white is good, I always liked the original ibooks and indeed had one until the logic board went south a month after the 3 year guarantee ran out. OK, it's not a Quicksilver but you get the idea. I quite like the idea of gunmetal metal-flake or black metal-flake. If you have a motor cycle show room nearby, it might be worth a look. I will post back any other ideas that i find. Hmm, I didn't mean to link to this but for some strange reason I am finding it hard to delete! ;D

Did a paint job on last MTB that colour, unfortunately it got stolen. Well getting the Phenom running with OSX was easier than I thought. I'm posting from it right now. No sound or GFX acceleration yet, but the PS/2 kb & mouse work, as do the sata hard drives & DVD, ethernet is working obviously. Lots still to test, firewire etc... but so far it's all good. ;D My mistake, the sound does work. I plugged the speaker in the wrong place. Durrrr...

Sorry about that. I've worked in the bodyshop for 5 years as a painters help. You do have to be very easy when using them, with very light stokes. I just thought if it was soft, you could go very light on the main pc's

Practice on something unimportant first, don't be an idiot like me.

When looking for my cheap replacement I saw alot of good 750i boards selling very cheap like £50-£70 775 mind.. I've really not read into installing OSX on Nforce based mobos AMD or INTEL cpus... which distro have you used? whats the performance like? True SLI under VISTA was quite appealing. why the ATI? kinda negates to point of the Nforce dont you think? My House mate just bought a 4850 and i really cant fault it.. falls just behind the 9800GTX but its soooo much cheaper.. nice little card. J.

Hi joe, Most of your questions are answered in this thread. Performance is good, but as you will see building a high spec/performance machine wasn't my goal. I was more interested in the challenge of using less compatible hardware, hence ATI in place of nVidia. The card is an HD 3650 with 512MB. I have got it working and it's faster than my second generation OCed 7600GT, but not a lot faster. At some point I will add support for this hardware to my OSX patcher script, I will then produce my own dist. At the moment I just used a modified cloned HD from my other machine.
