Are You Happy with the Selection of Graphics Cards Available for Macs. For G4's, there seem to be few options. However with a bit of ingenuity there are far more options available!

Hi aquamac, realy nice site here. I have a question. I have a G5 and want to flash a cheap x800gto card for my mac. I`m coming from germany and the there are not so many cards to get for a good price. But before i ask for the right one, i have some small questions, maybee you can answer me them. - will the flashed x800gto have 12 or 16 pipes ? cause the GTO will only have 12 (stock) - must i edit the reduced (what you write on your page) rom to other clockrates ? cause the xt is faster then a gto - or is the only thing, i must edit, the id of the card ? OK, and know what card should i pick to flash. www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a193401.html (Saphire with DDR2) www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a187717.html (Club 3D with GDDR3) www.geizhals.at/deutschland/a170393.html (Powercolour with GDDR3) Cooler looks as it cools good Thank you in advance And again nice site Greetings geeefive alias marc

Hi Geeefive & welcome to the aquamac forums! Taking your questions one at a time, I have compared the speed of the flashed card with Apples original and found no difference. The card should theoretically have 12 pipes, but either the mac flasher somehow goes around this or the Apple drivers are not taking full advantage of the cards full performance. You will need to edit the reduced rom device id on lines 2 & 8, to the same as your own cards device id, which you can check with atiflash. You also need to do the flashing with Panther, as Tiger will not boot with a PC card in place. You must install the reduced rom in the no confirm flasher of Graphiccellerator. Once you have your card and know your device id I can help if you get stuck.
I think all the cards you show would be fine, basically pick the one you like the price/look of the best! (That Powercolour looks nice). You should not have to reduce the speeds of the reduced rom as these ATI cards are very overclockable & have no problems with the Apple speeds.
PS, if you are interested I have one of these cards for sale that is already flashed, pm me if you are. Only other thing to remember is there is no DVI, but with the approriate adapter you can get dual VGA or VGA/TV with Apple TV adapter.
You are using in a G5 so you don't need to tape pins 3 & 11 on the back, but you will if you want to use in a G4.
Good luck.
aquamac.

I was reading somewhere on the net that some of the 8X agp card do not need taping of pins 3 & 11 in a Sawtooth. Something about their 2X agp running something different for those pins. Is that a hoax or is there some truth to the matter?

Hi JJ Thanks for the u no what! 8x cards will not physically fit into the 2x AGP slots anyway due to the extra "blip" in the slot itself & the lack of corresponding cutout in the card. What they probably mean is that 2x/4x cards do not need taping, these cards have 2 cutouts to fit the early AGP slots. Universal Card 2x Card.

Greetings geeefive
P.S: Yesterday i get a x800xt (Saphire) from a friend. Looked with devtools for the id. 4A4B !! Changed it in the reduced xt eprom. Flashed over VNC with no confirm flasher. I can see the card now in System Profiler as VGA CArd but no picture....... Don`t know why..... Done it in G5 with 10.3.9 ........ btw. the line in the eprom are 02 and 07, i think so. In the reduced ...

Ah, My card was a GT, try flashing with the standard reduced rom & no changes, This happened when I flashed my X850 Pro, although the device id showed up as 4A 49, my mac wanted to see it as 4a 48 which I believe is what the rom is as standard.
The card is like the red one on the bottom of the X800 Page. I will send you a pic tomorrow. The card I am selling is less than a month old, and has been fully tested. It is running at std X800 XT clocks & has not been tested beyond these.

actually, this AGP universal connector. it's used for AGP 2x/4x/8x capable cards. There is no AGP 2x/4x connector. It's either AGP 4x/8x AGP universal (but some only support 4x/8x 1,5V or less, like some radeon 9600 with AGP universal, r9600 is 4x/8x only) or AGP 2x only (3.3V) (this is not AGP 4x/8x !!) or AGP 4x/8x (looks like AGP 2x, but the cutout is on the right side) ! see here for more details

Hi Aqumac, I really like your opinion in this graphic card Nvidia 9500 GS 512MB. Is there any hope for it to work on Mac OS. I have installed and working version of Jas 10.5.4 but the video card above working on apple drive with one resolution. What is the best method in your opinion if there is to get fully working. Thanks

Long time no heard about you. I am still using inside my Mirror and my Cube the Ati 8500 and the Nvidia 6200 you flashed for me some three or four years ago. ;D

Lobano,
The 9500GS is a G96 card and will only work with OSX is basic VESA mode as there are currently no drivers for it.
NVIDIA_G96.DEV_0644.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS
The latest cards that can be got working in OSX are G92 cards such as 8800GT and 9800 GTX.
Hi bb,
That post of Gotoh's is an old one, he has not been around for a while, shame.
