I have a friend that came up to me and asked if i knew why some of his games kept on freezing out and why his xbox kept on making weird noises. I told him that like any computer, it might need some serious cleaning. So i told him that i would clean it for him and he said ok. The steps following are how someone takes apart and clean an xbox gaming console.
First of all, unplug all controllers and any cables you might have plugged into your console. I left the dvd infrared because it was small and wouldn't get in the way.
The next step is to turn your xbox upside down so you have the feet facing you.
Next, you want to carefully peel off the feet and the center stickers. *WARNING* Removing the stickers will void your warrenty. Do this at your own discretion.
Next you take out the screws. There are 6 of them. Be sure to put them in order so you know where they go back into the machine when you put it back together. After taking out the 6 screws, turn the xbox over and remove the top cover.
Next, you carefully remove the IDE drive cable and power cable and put them out of the way exposing the 8GB hard drive. There is a screw in the center holding in the hard drive. you need to remove that screw so you can remove the hard drive from the xbox.
This shows some of the electronics under the hard drive.
Next carefully remove the IDE cable and the power cable from the DVD drive.
Next, remove the screws from both sides of the DVD drive. There are 2, 1 on each side.
After removing the DVD drive, you can now access the main motherboard. Be sure to clean the heatsinks, cpu fan and rear fan with a can of compressed air. Be gentle, you don't want to accidently break some parts off. Also, make sure there is no dust left on the motherboard.
Now that the xbox is clean, you can reverse these steps to put the xbox back together. As for cleaning the DVD drive, i opened up the drive itself and used the canned air, but i would suggest to others is to use a CD/DVD lens cleaner. After everything is put all back together and screwed in, plug your plugs and controllers back in and enjoy your new clean xbox.
