I am starting this thread because i want to inform people that you can convert the DP 2.5 GHz AGP G5 from running liquid cooling to Air cooling.
The steps that i took with mine are several and also consisted of 2 Powermac G5's. A DP 2.5 and a DP 2 GHz model.
When i got the 2.5 model, it had signs of "white rice" So i had to completely rip apart the Delphi LCS unit. After clearing out every bit of coolant aka Glycol, i found out that the radiator itself had a large clog, so even if i did try to run the G5, it would overheat.
So now i had a G5 that wouldn't run even if i wanted to. So i was contemplating... a new G5, or over $100 to redo the watercooling to modern specs.
I hum and hawed about this for a few months, then on the local kijiji, i found someone that was selling a DP 2 GHz G5 with power issues. So $125 later, i had a parts machine.
After getting it, i tried the 2.5 GHz cpu's in the first G5, but found out that there were a few logicboard problems. Ok, so now onto the second G5. Put the cpu's in that machine and found out why it had power problems. A bad power supply.
Now comes the fun part, swapping parts from one to another.
I found out the logicboard in the DP 2 is the same as the one in the DP 2.5 so i stuck with the case and logicboard of the DP 2 G5. I then swapped out the PSU fron the DP 2.5 into the other and now went from a dieing ACBel PSU to a Liteon PSU, both 600 W and the Liteon is going strong. Found out that one fan that sits in front of the hard drives was whining, so i swapped that one out from the 2.5 machine into the DP 2.
As for the heatsinks....
Since the LCS from the AGP machines have the same standoff layout as 2 traditional G5 heatsinks, i decided to swap them. So now i have a pair of 2.5 GHz cpu's running on air cooling and i won't have to worry about leaks from a bad watercooling unit. Also I used Artic Silver 5 thermal compound for the CPU to heatsink connection.
After putting in the CPU's into the DP 2 G5, had to run the thermal calibration CD "AHD 2.5.8" to be exact and the thermal calibration went proper and right.
So now i have a modded G5 that is native 2.5 GHz dual cpu, running 3.5 GB ram and no water.
As for temperatures, i installed Temperature Monitor and noticed that the machine idles around 45 to 50 Degrees Celsius. Once it hits full load, it peaks out at around 70 to 75 degrees Celsius and then drops back down. There is no noticeable noise over a regular DP 1.8 or DP 2 GHz G5 from what i can tell. Unless it's doing heavy work, it's 110% quieter than my MDD was.
All in all, it was a well worth it mod.
