 Change CPU
« Thread Started on May 15, 2009, 1:06am »

Hi, I was given a Dual 867 MDD. I would be using this in our lab for word processing and internet only so I won't be spending for upgrades . However, the price of Dual 1.25 CPU is getting lower and lower so I am tempted to replace the Dual 867. Would there be any problems? After abandoning PPC in favor of Intel, I have another G4 ;D Thank You!

Hi,
it's simple and it works very well. I have done that before, here's the xbench test: http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc1=339076. You need to change multiplier on the CPU (according to PLLs table from bitsandpieces) to get higher than stock 1 GHz (7.5 x 133 MHz) frequency. To get 1.47 GHz, i also had to bump Core Voltage a little (to 1.60 V, as i remember). Little better cooling is also recommended.

Keep in mind that :

1) Dual 867 Mhz MDD bus is 133Mhz and you know that Dual 1,25 and 1,42 Ghz have a 167 Mhz bus.

2) Ram memory PC2100 have a 333 Mhz bus for the Dual 1,25 and 1,42Ghz. The Ram memory PC2600 have a 266Mhz bus for the Dual 867.

I think you have that a little backwards... :)

It's PC2100 = 266 MHz and PC2600 = 333 MHz

Bus speed difference no matters if you put 167 Mhz bus CPU onto 133 MHz lobo. CPU without changes will work with 133 MHz, so multiplier also will be "X" x 133 MHz, as i wrote before. You have to change CPU multiplier only to get desired frequency.
If you want to put 133 MHz CPU onto 167 MHz lobo, soldering on CPU daughtercard is required, like here:
http://www.macbidouille.com/articles/89/page3
BTW, there is na error: bus resistor configs for daughtercard are described improperly - it should be:
133MHz
R27 empty
R22 RESISTOR
R26 RESISTOR
167MHz Bus
R27 empty
R22 empty
R26 RESISTOR
I don't remember now, but it seems to me, that in french version it was correctly.
R-number is for Duals only. Singles have F-number but resistors are placed in the same order.
In MDD (133 or 167 Mhz) you can use even PC3200 memory, it will work.

Thanks for the correction reddrag0n, I indeed reverse the memory names.

In the same thread, you can find out how to change the Mobo bus too.

Yes, i know that ;) I use this knowledge to convert FW800 mainboards from 133 to 167 MHz and they works fine and stable.
With 867 DP mobos i had no final succes (i have convert 2 of them and both was unstable - tested with original 1.25 DP CPU), but this thread shows that it's possible.
Now i have 3 more working 867 DPs, maybe i will try with them...

Update:
Finally i did it... I converted 3 867 DPs to 167 MHz and 2 of them are stable and fully functional with higher bus speed.
So of 5 that i have converted, only 2 stable...
One daughtercard was stable even at 1.08 GHz with 167 bus, other runs well at 1.0 GHz. Everything with stock voltage.
