GTX 680 Working in Mac Pro - native!
« Thread Started on Jul 21, 2012, 5:54pm »

A few of you may have seen this already, but standard NVIDIA PC GTX 600 range cards are working in Mac Pro's with Mountain Lion GM with only a mod from Netkas to get open CL working. This can be done in OSX once you have booted up by replacing a file he has at his website. You won't get the spinning wheel or Apple logo but it works fine none the less!

Here is mine - 4 Gigs of ram!!

Not getting the boot screen is an EFI problem, but I can live with that for now. No other graphics card needs to be left in the machine as in the past.

Hi Aquamac,

I just received a EVGA gtx680 4gb and have a mac pro 2009 8cores. How did you plug the power connectors? They seem to ask for a 6pin and a 8pin in the gtx680. But in my macpro there is only two 6pin.

Thanks,

Biped

You will need an adapter like this

StarTech PCI Express 6 pin to 8 pin Power Adapter Cable (PCIEX68ADAP)

With this : StarTech PCI Express 6 pin to 8 pin Power Adapter Cable (PCIEX68ADAP) you essentially send 75w from the 6pin to a 150w 8pin. Will it not drain more power from the motherboard? Like over heating it?

If not and everything is good on the electrical side, what are the tweaks for the installation in mountain Lion?

Really appreciated,

You will not have a problem with overheating, mine has been running fine since July and uses less power at idle than the ATI 5870 that it replaced. The one I am using also has the 8 & 6 pin connector so I used an adapter similar to the one that Reddrag0n suggests above.

The only downside is missing the bootscreen, the first thing you see is a greyscreen, then the desktop.

Good luck.

Hello Aquamac.
Hope all is well. I have a macpro 3,1 with 16gb ram 2 ssd drives and running 10.8.2. currently runnig to GPU's Gt120 for display only and a GTX285 with no display attached. I just bought a ASUS GTX60 4GB dual 6 pin power connectors, because the guys at blackmagic advice me not to get the 6-8pin conf. I wil be running Resolve, after effects, Premiere Pro and C4D.My first option was the EVGA like yours but they dont have a dual 6 pin available so I got the ASUS. Can you help me understand the steps to install this card? PLEASE. I am a newbie at all this so just don't want to mess up my system. Do you have any problems with yours since you install the GTX680? Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

If you are running 10.8, then the 600 series should be natively supported. This means that it should work, with a real Mac Pro. You will not get the boot screen, so the first picture you will see is when the screen goes to the desktop. This will only work with Mountain Lion or as far as I am aware with the latest version of Lion, but as far as I am concerned that is not tested.

Let us know how you get on.

I am on 10.8.3 and it runs with absolutely no problems at all.
